Different Standards of Broadband Router Explained

Broadband routers are designed for convenience in setting up home networks, particularly for homes with high-speed internet service. Besides making it possible for all the electronic devices in the home to share an internet connection, broadband routers also enable sharing of files, printers, and other resources among home computers and other electronic devices.

A broadband router uses the Ethernet standard for wired connections. Traditional broadband routers required Ethernet cables that ran between the router, the broadband modem, and each computer on the home network. Newer broadband routers have a wired connection to the internet modem. They connect with the devices in the home wirelessly using the Wi-Fi standards.

Many different types of routers are available, and each one meets a specific standard. The routers that use the most current standard are available at a higher cost than those on older standards, but they include better features. The current standard is 802.11ac. It was preceded by 802.11n and — even earlier — 802.11g. All these standards are still available in routers, although the older ones have limitations.

802.11ac Routers

802.11ac is the newest Wi-Fi standard. All 802.11ac routers have newer hardware and software than previous implementations and are perfect for medium to large homes where speed and reliability are important.

An 802.11ac router utilizes dual-band wireless technology and operates on the 5 GHz band, allowing up to 1 Gb/s throughput, or a single-link throughput of at least 500 Mb/s on 2.4 GHz. This speed is ideal for gaming, HD media streaming, and other heavy bandwidth requirements.

This standard adopted the technologies in 802.11n but extend the capabilities by allowing for RF bandwidth as wide as 160 MHz and supporting up to eight multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) streams and up to four downlink multiuser MIMO clients.

The 802.11ac technology is backward compatible with 802.11b, 802.11g, and 802.11n hardware, meaning that while an 802.11ac router works with hardware devices that support the 802.11ac standard, it also provides network access to devices that only support 802.11b/g/n.

802.11n Routers

IEEE 802.11n, usually referred to as 802.11n or Wireless N), replaces the older 802.11a/b/g technologies and increases data rates over those standards by using multiple antennas, achieving rates from 54 Mb/s up to 600 Mb/s, depending on the number of radios in the device.

802.11n routers use four spatial streams on the 40 MHz channel and can be used on either the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz frequency band.

These routers are backward compatible with 802.11g/b/a routers.

802.11g Routers

The 802.11g standard is older Wi-Fi technology, so these routers are usually inexpensive. An 802.11g router is ideal for homes where the fastest speeds are not important.

An 802.11g router operates on the 2.4 GHz band and supports a maximum bit rate of 54 Mb/s, but usually has about a 22 Mb/s average throughput. These speeds are just fine for basic internet browsing and standard-definition media streaming.

This standard is fully compatible with the older 802.11b hardware, but because of this legacy support, the throughput is reduced by about 20 percent when compared to 802.11a.

Steps to boost your Home Wi-Fi

1. Limit the number of devices

Have friends and family coming over for a party and you don't want to share your primary Wi-Fi password? Just enable a guest network on your router with a separate, simpler password. Login to your router's admin settings and under the Wireless tab you will see an option of Guest network.

You can give a name to your network, set a password and even limit the number of users who can connect to the network simultaneously. Moreover, some routers also give you the option to block and remove a connected device if you feel that it is hogging up all the bandwidth.

Once your party is over, you can disable the guest network -- this way no one will know your home Wi-Fi password and you will not have to worry about your network being used later without permission.

2. Follow the simple steps to boost the home Wi-Fi

To some, Wi-Fi is a requirement as basic as electricity and running water. Most internet service providers install a basic modem/router that stays untouched in a corner. Here we show you some easy ways to solve common Wi-Fi issues at home.

3. Better placement: Keep it at the center of the house

This is one of the easiest ways to improve Wi-Fi coverage. Most users prefer to keep their routers in a corner of the house (usually near a window). While this does minimize wire clutter, it also limits your Wi-Fi range because the Wi-Fi signal spreads omni-directionally.

The ideal place to keep a router is in the center of your house so that it provides an even coverage across the home. Try and place the Wi-Fi router at eye-level or higher -- this further improves the signal strength. Finally, keep the router away from other interference causing devices (cordless phone base stations, other routers, printers, microwave ovens).

4. Repeaters = Better range

Unless you live in a single room or apartment, the router provided by your ISP will not be able to provide coverage through the house. You can swap out the existing router for a more powerful one but a simpler and cheaper way is to use a repeater. This takes the Wi-Fi signal from your router and 'repeats' it to improve coverage area.

The WPS method is the simplest way to connect a repeater: Enable WPS on the router and press the WPS button on the repeater. Everything is automatically configured in just a minute. There are several options available from D-Link, NetGear, TP-Link priced at Rs 1,000 onwards.

If you have an old (but functional) router lying around, you may also be able to use it as a repeater -- though this requires a bit of configuration in the settings page.

5. Change your Wi-Fi password regularly

Have you ever changed your Wi-Fi password? It might still be the same basic password from when it was first installed. You might have also shared the password with friends during a party and your neighbours could have the password too. This means someone could be stealing your Wi-Fi, leading to slow speeds and your monthly limits being crossed quickly. The best way to avoid this is to change your Wi-Fi password regularly - once in 6 months should be good enough for most users.

6. Try using a USB router
Take a look at the ports on your router. If you see a USB port, your router can do more than just broadcast a Wi-Fi signal.

Depending on your router model, the USB port can be used to connect an external hard drive (this will be available as network storage to all connected devices on Wi-Fi making it easy to share content) or to connect a printer (this will make the printer wireless and share it for anyone on the network).

Differences Between Flash Drives & Pen Drives

A flash drive and a pen drive perform the same essential function; however, many people confuse the terms. Colloquially, people may refer to a flash drive and pen drive as if they are the same device. This is due to the fact that all pen drives are flash drives. That being said, it is important to note that flash drives have usages that extend beyond the capabilities of a pen drive.

Major Differences

The major difference between a pen drive and flash drive is that a pen drive is generally only used as a mobile USB storage device, whereas a flash drive has many different uses for data storage. Another difference is that the pen drive always refers to a drive that can be plugged directly into a USB port. On the other hand, a flash drive may be accessible by a direct USB connection, a corded USB connection, or even stored internally inside a cell phone or mobile media device.

Flash Drive

Generally speaking, a flash drive is any data storage device that holds data with non-movable parts. Before the inception of flash drives, computer users used floppy discs and CDs to store small amounts of data. When a computer user inserts a disk or CD into a computer, the computer reads the devices through movable parts, such as a laser scanning a CD. Since the flash drive has no moving parts, it is less susceptible to damage. Another advantage of the flash drive is that it is almost universally compatible with a variety of devices. To transfer data between two devices both devices need to have a USB port or USB adapter, but most contemporary computers and electronic products have a USB port. This means that in addition to providing backup storage on a computer flash drives can also be used to store information from video game consoles, mobile media devices, and cellular phones.

Pen Drive

The pen drive is a type of flash drive named for its small pen-like appearance. Pen drives can be inserted directly into a USB port without a USB cord. Due to its lack of a cord, a pen drive is extremely mobile and can be attached to a key chain or put in your pocket.

How Pen Drive Works..

"Pen drive" is another name used to describe a certain type of universal serial bus (USB) flash drive. Pen drives are NAND-type flash memory cards that can be plugged into a computer's USB port. The term "Pen" refers to its size. This type of flash drive is so small that it can fit into the palm of your hand or hang on a lanyard. Also, it is often flat and rectangular, similar to the shape of a highlighter pen.

Pen drives are used to store data. These flash drives vary in storage capacity (64 MB to 32 GB) and are removable and rewritable. Techies often purchase pen drives as replacements or backups for CD-R's or floppy disks. However, the average Joe unwittingly purchases pen drives in the form of iPods and MP3 players. Yes, iPods and MP3 players are the most popular form of pen drives these days. And, the key to their success lies within their circuit boards.

Pen drives consist of a small printed circuit board. This circuit board provides a sturdy base for the pen drive's form and also serves as a means to collect information. The microchip within it (the circuit board) is able to extract data with relatively low electrical power. It is based on old EEPROMS technology that allows writing and erasure processes.

When a pen drive is connected to a USB port, it activates. Otherwise, it lies dormant. The USB port gives the pen drive access to information on a specific computer. Because most pen drives are formatted using FAT or FAT 32 File systems, they are compatible with almost any USB host/port on a computer.

Data is read, transmitted or rewritten from a pen drive to a computer (or vice versa) after it is properly connected and manipulated through a program. For example, after an iPod is connected to a computer, music can be downloaded to it or extracted from it by the owner. This is usually completed through programs like iTunes. Programs such as this are able to interface with pen drives in order to exchange information.

Today, companies that specialize in technology are working to improve on the pen drive. A lot of it has to do with storage capacity and other issues that limit its use. Meanwhile, the pen drive is being marketed in fashionable ways in order to attract a variety of consumers. Basically, the developers of the pen drive are finding unique and innovative ways to make it accessible to everyone.
